Albert W. Gilchrist was born in Greenwood, South Carolina on January 15, 1858, the son of General William E. and Rhoda Elizabeth (Waller) Gilchrist. After attending Carolina Military Institute and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, he became a Brigadier General in the Florida militia. Dorothy Dodd was a graduate of Florida State College for Women, became the state librarian in Florida in 1941 and served as the 1st state archivist in Fla.; she established a large Fla. collection at the State Library and authored articles and books on Fla., including "Florida, the land of romance"; she died at age 91 in 1994.
